How MOQ Works When Sourcing Sponges from China (Trial Orders Included)

2026-09-28

Quick answer: For cleaning sponges made in China, MOQ is usually 3,000-5,000 pieces per SKU, and it is set by four things: the minimum foam block the plant will run, the conversion run, the packaging run and any printed plate. Trial orders are possible, but they work when you accept a stock colour, a stock size and stock packaging – the moment you add a custom print or a custom shape, the setup cost moves the floor.

What Actually Sets the Number

Three of the four drivers are physical rather than commercial.

  • The foam block. A melamine block is foamed in a fixed mould. If your order only uses a slice of that block, the remainder has to be sellable or the plant eats the waste – which is why very small orders get quoted at a premium instead of a discount.
  • The conversion run. Cutting, hot-pressing, die-cutting and lamination all run in batches. Ten minutes of machine time is the same cost whether it produces 500 pieces or 5,000.
  • The packaging run. Film, bags and cartons have their own minimums, and printed film is where the real jump happens.
  • Plates and tooling. A printing plate, a laser embossing plate or a die-cut mould is a one-off cost. On a 3,000-piece order it can be a significant share of the unit price; on 30,000 pieces it disappears.

MOQ by Packaging Format

Packaging is the part of the quotation buyers most often forget to check. The formats we build every week, and what each one does to your order floor:

Pack format Typical specification What it does to MOQ
Waist card 30-300 mm card, 3-10 pcs per card Lowest impact – printed cards are cheap to plate
Single pack Around 100 x 70 x 30 mm stand-up bag Stock film keeps MOQ low; printed film raises it
Multi pack 2-100 pcs combinations Driven by the film print run
Display box Around 280 x 210 x 200 mm, 24 pcs Requires a carton print run plus assembly
Display shelf Around 1800 x 700 x 500 mm, 3-4 tiers Highest floor of the six – usually a full container item
Bulk carton 1-150 pcs per carton Cheapest route for a first order

A first order usually ships as bulk cartons – packaging is added in the second round.

How to Get a Trial Order Through

  1. Pick a stock SKU rather than a new design: standard block size, standard density.
  2. Accept a stock colour for round one. Ten colours are available for temperature-responsive foam and multi-colour sets for melamine, so the trial does not have to be white.
  3. Skip print on the first run and use neutral film or plain cartons.
  4. Order at the bottom of the band – 3,000 pieces instead of 5,000 – and put the money into shipping instead.
  5. Scale in the second order, once the surface test and the customer’s compliance review have both passed.

Container Math Matters More Than MOQ

A 3,000-piece order of uncompressed blocks can take up more container space than a 10,000-piece order of vacuum-compressed sheets, and ocean freight is priced on volume. Compression is the cheapest way to lower landed cost: compressed melamine sheets and vacuum-packed blocks reduce CBM substantially, and the foam opens back up after the bag is cut. If freight is your main cost line, the CBM and vacuum compression guide runs the numbers.

Production sits at 15-20 days for full containers, against a 3-day sample turnaround, FOB Ningbo or Shanghai.

For Distributors

We quote MOQ per SKU, and the band depends on the family: standard melamine blocks and cellulose cloths sit in the 3,000-5,000 piece range, while round floor pads are quoted per diameter and backing configuration because the pad press is set up per size. Start from the melamine sponge range, the cellulose sponge and dishcloth range or the floor pad range to see what fits a first order.
