Buyers comparing cleaning sponge suppliers keep running into the same question: is a melamine foam sponge from an independent factory a workable substitute for the branded melamine foam names they already know? The short answer is yes, provided you specify density, format and finishing yourself rather than expecting a drop-in match.
First, what Basotect actually is
Basotect is a BASF SE registered trademark for a melamine foam product family. It is widely used in acoustic, construction and industrial applications, and it is well known in Europe. It is worth being precise about one thing: the trademark identifies a particular branded product, not the material class as a whole. Melamine foam has been manufactured and sold under many brand names and as generic material for decades.
So when a buyer asks for a melamine foam sponge “like Basotect”, the honest answer is that the chemistry is not a secret. What differs between suppliers is the foam structure, the density distribution, the cell count, how the block is cut and compressed, and the finishing. Those are specification choices you can make, and they are what should drive your supplier decision.
What actually determines sponge performance
Four variables decide how a melamine foam sponge behaves in use. None of them is the brand on the carton.
- Density (kg/m3). Low density foam is softer and more flexible, suited to delicate surfaces and lighter scrubbing. Higher density foam holds its shape longer and works harder on baked-on residue. Most bulk programs run somewhere between 8 and 16 kg/m3, and the right figure depends on what the sponge is used on.
- Cell structure and pore size. Open-cell structure is what gives melamine foam its cleaning mechanism: the network of open pores takes in water and releases it under pressure, carrying surface dirt away. A more uniform pore structure means more consistent performance across a batch.
- Format and compression level. Block, sheet, roll, or cut-to-shape. Compression changes thickness, density and handling characteristics, so it is a specification decision rather than a product identity.
- Finishing. Die-cut shapes, printed surfaces, color, and packaging format. For a private label program this is usually where most of the visible differentiation happens.
Where a branded name does add value
To be fair to the branded option: a known brand can carry real advantages in a specific retail scenario. If your customer recognises the name on the shelf, that recognition has value. Certification claims backed by a large corporate testing program can also shorten your own paperwork review. And a brand with an established distribution network means the buyer already knows what they are getting.
These are commercial advantages, not material advantages. If your program is private label, wholesale, or sold into a market where price and specification control the purchasing decision, the brand premium is being paid for something your buyer can get elsewhere at a lower cost.
What to ask a melamine foam supplier
Whichever name you are comparing against, the questions that determine whether you get a consistent product are the same:
- Density with a stated tolerance, not just a range
- Whether the foam is produced in-house or sourced, and at what stage the block is made
- Pore structure consistency and how it is controlled between batches
- Cutting, die-cutting and lamination capability
- Print method and minimum quantities for a private label program
- Which test documentation is available on request, and for which product grades
A factory that answers these before quoting is usually a factory that can supply consistently. A factory that quotes on brand name alone is not.
When an independent supplier is the better fit
Independent melamine foam producers tend to win in a few predictable situations:
- Private label programs where the brand has to be yours anyway, and the only real question is whether the specification is met consistently.
- Non-standard formats. Die-cut shapes, unusual sizes, composite builds and multi-layer products are often easier to get from a producer that runs its own cutting and lamination lines.
- Cost-per-use decisions. If you are modelling cost per cleaning task rather than cost per piece, density and durability specification matter more than label.
- Supply continuity. A producer with its own foam plant controls the input. That reduces the risk of a branded supply line changing specification or allocation without notice.
How to run a fair comparison
When you put branded and generic melamine foam sponges side by side, compare like with like. Match density first, then format, then finishing. Test on the surfaces your customer actually cares about, not on a generic test panel. Run a blind use test with your own team: a fixed number of cleaning tasks per sponge, scored on the same scale.
Keep in mind that the branded sponge is usually not performing a different mechanism. Melamine foam cleaning is mechanical, driven by the open-cell structure and water. Two sponges made from the same density and pore structure will clean comparably. The measurable differences are how long they last, how they feel in the hand, how well they hold a cut edge, and how consistent the batch is.
Questions buyers send us
Can you make a sponge equivalent to a branded melamine foam sponge?
We produce open-cell melamine foam from the block stage, and we can match a density grade, a format and a finishing spec against a target product. What we cannot do is reproduce a trademarked product under that brand. What we can do is match the measurable specification and document it.
What is the minimum order for a private label melamine sponge?
MOQs start around 3,000 pieces for standard shapes, and higher for custom die-cutting or printing. We will confirm the exact figure once the shape, size and packaging format are fixed.
Do you supply test documentation?
Yes. OEKO-TEX Standard 100, REACH screening, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 documentation, and food-contact test reports for applicable grades are available on request. Tell us which grades your program needs and we will tell you what we can provide for each one.
Do you produce the foam yourself?
Yes. We operate our own foam plant, which means the density and cell structure are controlled in-house rather than purchased and re-cut. MOQs from 3,000 pieces, factory-direct.
