Shipping Melamine Sponges: CBM Math, Vacuum Compression and FBA Carton Planning

2026-09-25

Quick answer: Melamine foam is one of the lightest rigid materials shipped in commerce – 8-16 kg/m3 means a full 40ft container fills by volume long before it fills by weight. Your landed cost is therefore a volume problem, and the three levers are vacuum compression, carton dimensional planning, and (for Amazon sellers) FBA inbound rules. Get all three right and freight per piece drops by more than half.

Why Air Is Your Main Freight Cost

Run the numbers on a standard 100 x 60 x 20 mm block. At 8 kg/m3, a block weighs about 1 gram. You could fit tens of thousands of them in a 40ft high-cube container by weight – but loose-packed blocks fill that container several times over by volume. You are paying ocean freight mostly for air.

This is why experienced buyers do not compare factories on unit price alone. A factory that compresses foam to 16 kg/m3, vacuum-packs, and loads cartons tightly can land product at a lower total cost than a cheaper quote shipped loose. Ask every supplier the same question: what is the packed CBM per 10,000 pieces?

Three Volume Levers

  • Vacuum compression. Compressed melamine foam packs flat and rebounds when the customer opens it. Depending on block thickness and pack format, vacuum packing typically cuts shipping volume dramatically versus loose cartons – we plan cartons around the rebound ratio of each SKU.
  • Carton dimensional planning. Standard cartons leave dead corners with rectangular blocks. Carton internal dimensions matched to block multiples (with a compression allowance) recover that space. Our standard is a drop-test-validated carton spec per SKU, not a generic box.
  • Density selection. A 16 kg/m3 block doubles the scrubbing life of an 8 kg/m3 block for maybe 30% more volume-per-piece. When freight is the dominant cost, the higher-density block often wins on landed cost per cleaning session.

FBA-Specific Planning

Amazon inbound adds its own constraints, and they are manageable when planned at the packing stage rather than discovered at the fulfillment center:

  • Carton weight and dimensions. Keep master cartons within FBA handling limits and plan multipack counts so the unit economics still work after pick-and-pack fees.
  • Labeling. FNSKU or UPC labels applied at the factory, suffocation-warning bags for polybagged items, and carton labels placed to survive transit handling.
  • Compression after packing. Vacuum-packed multipacks reduce inbound storage volume fees – a direct monthly saving on slow-moving ASINs.

Where FoamTech Fits In

We ship cleaning sponges worldwide daily and plan CBM at the quotation stage, not after: standard-density melamine blocks for bulk programs, and individual packaging and counter display programs for retail and FBA lines. Production runs 15-20 days for full containers, with vacuum compression, barcode labeling, and drop-test-validated cartons built into the packing plan.

Send us your target market and retail format, and we will quote the same product two ways – loose and vacuum-compressed – so you can see the freight difference on paper before you wire anything.
